Vampires

The vampires are streaming from schools and churches

and prisons. And there are serpents in the halls,

endless writhing chains of

eyes concealing eyes, absorbing all light.

A vast lattice of unblinking glassy marbles

chatters in echoing loops

a sprawling maze of eyes,

Thump Thump Thump Thump

undulating rollercoaster rails

carrying screaming chariots of eyes.

The vampires know

they're hijacking the flow

pre-empting life

with a simulation of life,

disrupting communications,

producing unauthorized mutations

in a darkened laboratory,

in a hall of inverted eyes.

The pregnancy of the moment

the lightning flash in the twin corridors of the eyes

slash of hissing light

across the fissure joining

monumental tangles of machinery

into warring hemispheres

Mistaken identity,

The predator's stare in a subway tunnel,

elevator, or parking lot

the clock inching toward a moment

magnetically drawn to repeat itself

forever.

The gifted children wait,

patiently enduring the gravity,

hovering in abandoned lots

practicing with their needles

for the alchemy of psychic bloodbath

to shatter all the mirrors

and release all the thirsty eyes

streaming into the sky.

The vampires are drawing lines in fresh cement

anotomical diagrams of angels

articulating the labyrinthine

equation of the soul,

the maddening puzzle of eyes.

Close the circle,

study the pupil

Open your eyes

to this falling, dying

kingdom of the blind.

All blood is the same shade of thirst

to a vampire. All the world

is a pulsing vein, and the hunger

of shattered souls for union

is undying.
